Starwood Hotels and Resorts has announced it will be establishing a new Westin hotel as part of the $325 million 111 Mary Street development, a 38 story mixed use hotel and apartment tower which was approved last month.

The 286 room hotel is scheduled to open its doors to the public in 2018.

The Brisbane Westin hotel will feature:

  • A podium level pool with swim up bar
  • Conference/meeting facilities including 24 hour business centre
  • A gymnasium
  • Ground and podium level restaurants and cafes

The announcement follows Starwood’s other five star hotel planned for 300 George Street under the W Hotel brand.

“It will give us a Westin hotel in all the major capital cities,” Sean Hunt, regional vice-president at Starwood Hotels and Resorts, said.

“The Westin hotels are market leaders in Sydney and Melbourne, with the highest combination of occupancies and room rates,” he said.

“We look forward to working with Starwood on this development project and the debut of Westin in Queensland,” said 111 Mary Street developer Sam Chong.

The current hotel industry occupancy rate for luxury Brisbane hotels is sitting at a healthy 80% according to STR Global’s July occupancy figures.

A past proposal by Metacap Developments known as Empire Square included apartments branded as Westin Residences, however the project subsequently fell victim to the Global Financial Crisis credit squeeze which saw the project shelved in October 2008.

The new planned Westin Hotel at 111 Mary Street is a dedicated 5 star resort hotel separate to the rest of the building’s 167 residential apartments.
