Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has unveiled plans for a new inner-city sports precinct where basketball, baseball, rugby and cricket could be played for generations to come.
Cr Schrinner said the Breakfast Creek Sports Precinct plan – which incorporates an innovative water harvesting and reclamation system – was a perfect example of a legacy project that the Brisbane2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games can deliver.
“The mayors of south east Queensland first came up with the plan to go for the Olympic and Paralympic Games because they knew the lasting legacy that can come from hosting the world’s greatest sporting event,” he said.
“Our Breakfast Creek Sports Precinct plan can be part of that legacy by transforming an under-utilised and tired area of our city into a thriving precinct that would stage local, national and international sports events all year round.
“An indoor venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games is already proposed at this location.
“I believe we should seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and turn this unique 29-hectare site into a green inner-city multi-sports oasis that could be used by future generations.
“As far as legacies goes, it doesn’t get much better than this.”
Under the plan, the old Albion Raceway would be shifted to another location and a new six-star Brisbane Indoor Sports Centre constructed.
The centre will host the Olympic and Paralympic basketball events, and incorporate netball, volleyball, goalball and badminton facilities as well as dedicated para-sports facilities and six external 3×3 basketball courts.
Brothers Rugby Union would move to the southern end of the precinct current used for the raceway and provided expanded facilities, including an additional playing field.
Allan Border Field would remain in its current location and receive additional seating as part of expanded facilities for Queensland Cricket.
A proposed baseball and multi-use sports fields will be incorporated along with a dog off-leash area.
A large green spine would run through the centre of the precinct which will connect Crosby Road to Breakfast Creek and be available for community events.
“This is a really exciting proposal and we’ve already been working closely with the Queensland Government, Brothers Rugby and Queensland Cricket on these plans,” Cr Schrinner said.
“I’m confident that this could be a sports and recreation precinct we can all be proud of, one that incorporates dedicated accessible facilities at the outset while offering expanded facilities for sports that are aiming to grow their participation among women.”
Deputy Mayor and Civic Cabinet Chair for Economic Development and the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Krista Adams said the Breakfast Creek Sports Precinct plan also includes an innovative proposal to keep the fields green.
“As every sporting club in Brisbane knows, keeping fields green throughout the year can be not only be time-consuming but costly,” Cr Adams said.
“Under our plan, all fields across the entire Breakfast Creek Sports Precinct will be irrigated by an Urban Utilities water harvesting and reclamation system.
“This would deliver both financial and environmental sustainability outcomes for waste, water and energy right across the park.
“It will also ensure our sports precinct remains the greenest and most sustainable in the country.”
I think this is just the greatest idea for the future going beyond the 2032 as well.It would certainly breathe life into breakfast creek and surrounds.I think you could relocate the raceway,harness and greyhounds plus I would like to see a new thoroughbred racetrack dedicated to night racing , combining all three codes in one complex out at Springfield central within walking distance from the Springfield Central train and bus station.That would be a great move.

Nothing mentioned about Swimming facilities..
This would be a good location for the Olympic Stadium, rather than destroying tbe heritage listed East Brisbane State School and demolishing the Gabba. The adjoining rail yards would also be an alternative.
I disagree and agree with Michael on this.
Constructing another large stadium wouldn’t make financial sense as we would have too many stadiums to maintain which would continue to create a money pit for the state government. We already struggle to make ends meet with the Gabba and Suncorp.
The school is at risk and that is a shame. It needs to be carefully considered.

This area is filled with beautiful old tree’s, wild life and heritage. Why would you ruin it with an expensive, wasteful indoor sporting facility which will not be used by the locals paying for it?
Would be an awesome site to have 2 international artificial field hockey pitches where some permanent and temporary stands with full admin/catering etc.. facilities available as well as a multi purpose indoor facility that can host numerous sports.
