A detailed masterplan for Brisbane’s newest park is a step closer with the Victoria Park Draft Vision released yesterday.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner revealed the masterplan which gives a clear picture of what Brisbane’s biggest park in 50 years can look like.

“This is going to be a sanctuary in the city for residents and visitors. It will be a place to relax and enjoy an eclectic range of attractions within one 45ha space,” Cr Schrinner said.

“This iconic park will also drive tourism by attracting national and international visitors, given its proximity to the city and public transport links, including the Brisbane Metro,” Cr Schrinner said.

The masterplan includes:

  • Wetlands with boardwalks and trails

  • Adventure Alley – an all abilities high ropes course
  • Mountain bike trails
  • Water Play Gully – a children’s water park
  • Skate park, tennis courts, sports fields, golf skills green and cricket nets
  • A Cultural Hub with installations, indigenous art and sculpture park
  • Farm Gate – a large community garden and urban farm
  • A unique glass-enclosed Cultural Hub

“The community has driven what it is going to be in the park through thousands of ideas submitted during the consultation process,” Cr Schrinner said.

“We are already a green space capital with more than 2100 parks, but this one is going to be one of Australia’s iconic spaces.

“Residents told us they want a natural place filled with shady trees and water features, and the vision reflects this with opportunities to increase the tree canopy from 10% to 55% and create a lake and wetlands, while protecting this greenspace for future generations.

“More than 16,300 people helped shape the Victoria Park Draft Vision, with more than 5400 ideas shared through our online survey and community engagement events.

“I encourage everyone to look at the draft vision on Brisbane City Council’s website and let us know what you think.

“The next round of consultation will inform the final master plan for Victoria Park, which is why it’s so important to have your say about it today.

“With your help, Victoria Park will become an amazing public parkland where you can enjoy more to see and do and be surrounded by opportunities to connect with your friends, family and with nature right in the inner city.

The existing park will start the transition into a parkland in 2021 with the popular putt putt course, driving range and function centre remaining on site.
