Sunland, the developer behind the Q1 tower and Palazzo Versace Hotel has revealed its plans for a $600-million-dollar development on the Spit, Gold Coast.
The Mariner has been designed by architectural superstar Dame Zaha Hadid and consists of 370 apartments, a 69 room hotel, Art Gallery and Aquarium, which at completion will be the largest in Queensland.
The 44 story towers mimic Sunland’s other current development Grace at Coronation, with clear similarities between the two developments. The towers have been designed to not obstruct the views of existing Main Beach residents while acting as a stunning new feature point of the Gold Coast skyline.
The project marks a significant transformation of the site which is presently used for retail and car parking into one of the Gold Coasts premier destinations.
In order to mitigate traffic concerns Sunland is proposing a number of improvements to Seaworld Drive and Waterways Drive which will improve traffic flow, furthermore Sunland is proposing a 1km extension of the pedestrian track Federation Walk.
The spit is often a sore point of conversation for Gold Coast residents with a number of schemes knocked back due to objections from local residents. While Sunland’s proposal has received objections from residents, primarily in the Main Beach area.
A phone survey was commissioned by Sunland to gauge support and found 49 per cent of people aware of the development were in favour.
Sunland anticipates that The Mariner will bring 500,000 new visitors to the Spit annually and $56.8 million dollars in new expenditure for the Gold Coast.
This is a sure reason for Main Beach business owners to be excited as Tedder Avenue has seen a number of its business close over the past year due to a lack of tourists visiting Main Beach.
The development is currently before the Gold Coast City Council, a decision is not expected until after the March 19 Local Government Elections.
