Clem Jones Centre in Carina has submitted an application for a new Gymnasium building to be constructed with in the centre. The structure is to be built next to the existing indoor pool.
The new building, we allow the centers’ gym to be relocated into the new facility, moving it from an existing building that is often hot in summer and lacks typical amenities such as air-conditioning.
Designed in kit form, the structure will be made of of robust and simple elements to express an industrial style of building. The building will be clad in translucent material, revealing the structure. The expressed structure creates a deliberate rhythm and scale within the building.
Large openable windows allow for cross ventilation, driving hot air up a central atrium, cooling the building naturally. The openings also allow for a visual connection to the pool and play grounds in the center. When closed, these windows make the building feel like a ‘lightweight framed container that allows silhouettes of activity to appear”.
At night, the translucent cladding allows the building to glow like a lantern in the grounds of the Clem Jones Centre. The openness of the building allows each space to connect well to each other, both visually and physically.
The central atrium becomes the common circulation space between rooms as well as allowing the natural ventilation. It also acts as the buildings corridor with a ground level landscape feature.
Thought up by ML Design, the proposal will see a total of 2,120.5m2 of new space. The ground floor will house a weight rooms, cardio room, meeting ‘pods’, locker and shower rooms as well as the landscaped atrium feature. Upstairs will be two air-conditioned fitness rooms, one large non air-conditioned fitness room as well as a specialised fitness space.
