Vicinity Centres, the owner of Mt Ommaney Shopping Centre has proposed a development application for an expansion of the centre to the north-western portion of the shopping complex, which is to be known as the ‘Mt Ommaney Entertainment and Leisure Precinct’.

This is an updated development application that, if approved will supersede an older application which previously positioned the cinema and restaurants to the north-western side of the centre.

Old DA proposal

The new application instead proposes 11,481sqm of additional retail space which would include a new seven-screen cinema, gym, pub, dining and entertainment precinct as well as space for a rebuilt community centre on ground level.

Designed by Blight Raynor, the six-storey development would involve the demolition of an existing community centre and office space.

Development Rundown:

  • Community centre: 408sqm – Upper Carpark
  • Gymnasium: 655sqm – Upper Carpark
  • Amenities & Storage: 314sqm – Retail Level
  • Retail: 1,817sqm – Retail Level
  • Leisure: 1,754sqm – Retail Level
  • Pub: 912sqm – Retail Level
  • Cinema: 3,997sqm – Cinema Level
  • Cinema mezzanine: 1,157sqm – Cinema Level
  • New sky bridge linking the main centre to the new satellite extension
  • Grand total 11,481sqm.

According to architect Blight Raynor, the ambition of the application is to transform the closed shopping mall into a more tangible and engaging community heart.

The landscape design for this proposal has been undertaken by Lat27.

The Entertainment and Leisure Precinct (ELP) creates a new ‘front door’ to the precinct, significantly more transparent and sculptural than the traditional closed box form of suburban shopping centres.

The sculptural form is created by contrasting a series of cinema ‘cubes’ with an organic level beneath. This level connects the ELP with the existing shopping mall, forming a serpentine bridge opening into and transforming part of the mall.

Beneath this linking level are two carpark levels, one fully subterranean and one partially, the later screened by dense landscaping.

The development application number for this project is A004984677.
