A development application has been submitted for a new flagship Louis Vuitton store located at 180 Queen Street in the former National Australia Bank building.

The overall development scheme involves the expansion of the existing retail tenancy which was previously occupied by Country Road to include the basement level of the building for additional retail floor space.

The proposal involves demolition of walls at the basement level that will marginally increase the gross floor area of the building to allow for open plan gallery space.

A VIP shopping experience is planned for the mezzanine level which includes a wrap around glass balustrade.

According to the development application, the proposed development does not alter the existing façade of the heritage building, or its appearance when viewed from the public realm with the exception of minor changes to the advertising devices to reflect the new retail tenancy.

The proposal represents a great outcome for the City of Brisbane and the Queen Street Mall with a highly regarded global fashion house showing confidence in Brisbane’s retail sector which was has been significantly impacted by the COVID 19 virus.

The building was constructed in 1928-30 for the National Bank of Australasia. The building was designed in the Interwar Commercial Palazzo, or neo-classical style, which was popular with banks and office buildings in this period.

Industry observers say that Louis Vuitton outgrew its current Brisbane store which is located on the prominent Queens Plaza corner of Queen and Edward Street. It is not yet known what will be replacing Louis Vuitton when it vacates its Queens Plaza space.

In 2018, Louis Vuitton invested $11 million to build its flagship Sydney George Street store.
