The interior designs of Brisbane’s four new inner-city underground railway stations will showcase a distinctive architectural style.

The architects say that the designs are inspired by the traditional ‘Queenslander’ verandah, however, the wall and ceiling designs for the four new Cross River Rail inner-city underground stations exhibit a contemporary and futuristic aesthetic, reminiscent of sci-fi films.

The traditional curved walls you would see in underground systems around the world such as the London underground has been engineered out and replaced with a unique copper angular design.

Below the surface of the stations, the adit, mezzanine and other associated tunnels will feature this unique angular copper style of architecture.

The four stations will have the same designs however materiality, colours and floor texture will feature subtle variations for each station.

A prototype mock-up section of the station has been built to test out durability of the design.

The project will see four new underground inner-city stations built with Exhibition Station activated as a new permanent above ground station for Bowen Hills. Dutton Park station is also receiving an upgrade.

The Boggo Road Station will be located near the South East Busway and is expected to serve as an interchange between bus, train and bike services.

The Woolloongabba Station will be located near the Gabba Cricket Ground and will serve as a major transport hub for sports fans attending events at the venue.

The Albert Street Station will be located in the heart of Brisbane’s central business district and is set to become a major destination for commuters and tourists as it is located on the doorstep of the Queen Street Mall and Queen’s Wharf.

The Roma Street Station will be located near the Roma Street Parkland and is expected to serve as a gateway for the entire rail network, being slated as the new ‘Grand Central Station’.

All five stations will feature spacious concourses, modern facilities and multiple entry and exit points to ensure smooth and efficient passenger flow. The stations will also feature state-of-the-art security and accessibility features, including CCTV cameras, lifts and escalators.

    Factual error:

The Exhibition Station will be located near the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and is expected to serve as a major transport hub for visitors attending events at the centre and showgrounds as well as a new way of commuting into the CBD for residents.

Futuristic, my backside. This is horrible. Looks nothing like a Queenslander veranda.
It comes off as dark and unwelcoming. The angles make it feel more hemmed in then a typical curved metro system. And there is the issue. This is not a metro system. It’s a few underground stops on a cross river rail line.
The color choice is garish and uninspiring. The lighting is poor. Dampness and mold will grow well in this prehistoric cave system. Major fail Queensland Government.
