Myer has announced that it will not renew its lease in the landmark Queen Street Mall shopping centre that bears its name.
The move paves the way for a possible large-scale redevelopment of the centre, which would transform the retail experience for the dominant Queen Street Mall site.
Since its opening in 1988, the Myer Centre has been a prominent fixture in the mall, offering a suburban-like retail experience and boasting small to large stores, with Myer itself being the largest followed by Target, Event Cinemas and Coles.
The Myer Centre redevelopment was featured on this list as the third most significant project. The article highlighted the centre’s dominant position in the Queen Street Mall since its opening in 1988 and its potential for transformation with a long-overdue redevelopment.
As part of the article, a conceptual hypothetical mock-up development was created and called ‘Entrepôt 2030‘
BrisbaneDevelopment.com conceptual rendering of possible large scale redevelopment of Brisbane’s Myer Centre
“An immersive, high-density mixed-use development which revolutionises the idea of shopping into an experience-based precinct. At its core, an elevated platform would fill the air with music and dance, with surrounding towers playing host to onlooking bars and restaurants.”
“Retail would rise vertically from the lower levels of buildings. Gone are the days of large format department stores, with retail taking smaller formats.” – BrisbaneDevelopment.com
The article speculated on the potential options for the centre, including downsized contemporary retail stores, live music, restaurants and bars as well as possible new towers to rise up.
Vicinity and ISPT, the co-owners of the centre, confirmed in a statement that Myer had rejected an offer to relocate to a smaller area. They also added that they were exploring various options for the centre, which included the possibility of a contemporary department store with reduced floor space or plans that did not involve a department store.

“We look forward to delivering a reimagined destination in the heart of Brisbane’s evolving CBD and anticipate sharing our plans shortly.” – Vicinity & ISPT
According to the CEO of Myer, John King, the company will be searching for a new location in the CBD as it was unable to reach a favorable commercial agreement with the landlord. However, he also mentioned that Myer remains dedicated to serving the Brisbane market.
Construction of the Myer Centre in the 1980’s
Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner suggests that the present time is an ideal moment for the owners of the shopping centre to reimagine and revamp one of Queensland’s top retail destinations.
“Myer first opened at its current location just before Expo ‘88 and with the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon, now is the perfect time for the centre’s owners to reimagine one of Queensland’s premier retail spaces.”
“The Myer Centre once had live music on its lower levels as well as a fun park at the top and has always evolved and moved with the times. I think this is a fantastic opportunity for the centre to be reinvigorated into a vibrant, modern retail experience for residents and visitors and I look forward to working with the owners on their future plans,” he said.
It is not yet known the scale of redevelopment on the cards for the Myer Centre with Vicinity and ISPT exploring all options.
Vicinity is the developer behind the Buranda Shopping Centre Redevelopment proposal which aims to turn the site into a new mixed-use precinct. This application is currently being assessed by Brisbane City Council planners.

Wonderful opportunity to open this space to new development which can revitalise what was once a very popular place in the CBD.
Really looking forward to seeing how this envelops as it is prime real estate.

Couldn’t give a rats about what’s going here, so long as they knock this ugly, outdated cesspit down. Would look much nicer as a construction pit anyway! Hopefully they preserve the old, historically significant Hungry Jacks on the corner.

If they going to get rid of Myer centre because the so what Pandemic Covid19.. I can see why nowadays each time i visit the Myer centre it kind of looks like its totally run-down almost like as if we are back living in the start of the 80s before the so what whole entertainment came to Brisbane of World Expo 1988. But it looks really rundown. Even most stores there are not open anymore or because they can’t afford to pay rent and its shop for prolong due to the interest going high. The RENT is going worse across Australia.. The whole lot of anywhere you go is the same. Independent stores are shut for good. I hear they also want to get rid of the Post offices in Australia because NO one post letters anymore. They also want to get rid of the whole banks across Australia because NO one goes banking anymore… Though the use of the world wide web the internet is killing the whole life into a virtual life in front of a computer instead.
Myer centre was fun specially the 90s.. there was theme park inside it., I could scream my lungs out on the chuchu train when i was a kid while grandmother went shopping at (Coles new world) Nowadays Myer centre looks rather dry and some what dead for quite sometime…. I don’t no if you people have notice it.. But the walls are falling apart when you enter the Myer centre where at the entrance near the bus stops below.
Though i will miss Myer centre…. i guess i shop more at David Jones on the other side of the old queen street mall. And feel as though the Queen st mall will eventually be taken down and built something newer… What that is i have no idea what the future holds….
The whole Brisbane looks really run down.. less people wondering the city.. the subsurbs are hardly no one to be seen on the streets.. Everyone is on the computer 24/7 at home stuck alldays wonder why no one has a life to get out for a change.
Brisbane is going to host the Olympic games in 2032… not long but i feel that Brisbane is knowadays run down and less people around… I wonder how are they going to come up with this so what Brisbane Olympic games…. you have to be a joke to come up with this… when there’s hardly no one around… The restuaurants always close early.. the shops shuts down by 430pm and now they all expect everyone to go home to bed time… How on earth will Brisbane be awaken if your going to expect to bring the whole world and tourism… make sure you dont enforce the tourim to go back to the hotel because brisbane shuts down early and there’s hardly much to do other then a pretty nice tall office building and all…
Sundays not all restaurants are open in brisbane. Very angry about this… only gives you 50 percent what is available in brisbane city… and else where… and then expect to have some other stores or restaurants shut on a MONDAY because THEY WHERE OPEN on the weekend instead for a short period of time…
As you can see gentlemen’s i been living here in Brisbane since i came out of the House commission I feel though the whole Brisbane is run down but also less things to do at night because during the day its nothing more then seen a few office people having coffee at a corner beside the business building…… WAKE UP AUSTRALIA…. do something about it.. By the way you also destroy the good Australian shows on tv such as Hey hey its Saturday,… Its a Knockout… you took Countdown abc tv down…. You took other major fun shows.. Now your just wanna be american but your only dreaming because not much in progress with the whole Brisbane is concern…
I rather go back to the 90s and revived life instead,. At least the queen st mall was renovated many times and it was fun.. the Myer centre was fun and the cinemas across Brisbane was fun in the 90s. No one goes out there anymore… its rather dead.. I wonder how they going to keep Brisbane awaken 24/7 when the Olympic games.. otherwise no one will ever care to come here and expect to be STUCK IN THE HOTEL watching late-night news and off you go to sleep…….

Demolish the whole thing. Myers departure may instigate the end of an old eyesore. its a prime sight, build something incredible and iconic.

Tear that ugly eyesore down. It looks like it’s from the trashy 80’s on the inside and a dirty old bomb shelter on the outside. Build something fresh, fun with better public access. Queens Plaza should be extended to accommodate Myer or move into Wintergarden with front and rear street access.

Can you blame them for leaving. The Myer Centre is old, its tired, outdated and has a poor layout and accessibility. Its time to replace it with a modern structure that has better accessibility, better open and public al fresco space that suits the QLD lifestyle. I hope Myer does return to the CBD keeping jobs and more competition.
