PRAX Studio has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform the Mt Coot-Tha Quarry precinct into a vibrant public space that if adopted promises to be an iconic destination for Brisbane.
The project aims to rejuvenate a scarred landscape into a flourishing hub for cultural, recreational, and community activities, reinforcing Brisbane’s status as a leading global city and draws parallels between the famous Eden Project in the UK and the Hollywood music Bowl in Los Angeles.
The name Mt Coot-Tha itself derives from the Aboriginal word ‘ku-ta’, meaning honey, reflecting the area’s history of honey collection from native stingless bees. PRAX Studio’s vision integrates this cultural heritage through honeycomb-like structures and water features that symbolise the central role of water and life in Indigenous cultures.
This project emphasises a seamless integration between the built environment and the natural landscape. Structures are inspired by the eucalyptus leaf, paying homage to Mt Coot-Tha’s history as “one tree hill,” a site once stripped of its trees by European settlers. This approach not only honours the past but also aims to create a harmonious and organic connection between the community and nature.
PRAX Studio’s proposal for Mt Coot-Tha Quarry is a comprehensive plan that includes several key precincts, each offering unique attractions and facilities. The central theme of the proposal is to create an open, green, and accessible space that can host a variety of events and activities, drawing visitors from around the world.
Master Plan Precincts
PRAX Studios’ submission is part of the Brisbane City Council’s broader visioning project to reimagine the Mt Coot-Tha Quarry, a move aimed at transforming the quarry into a world-class destination.
This initiative, detailed in the 2023-24 Budget, invites residents and industry stakeholders to help shape the future of the quarries. However, the Council has recently remained silent on the project, with no further progress being made despite submissions.
The PRAX Studios project draws inspiration from successful global examples like the Eden Project in the United Kingdom and Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, envisioning a space that enhances Brisbane’s tourism and recreational offerings.
This is a once in a generation opportunity to deliver a vibrant new public space for Brisbane befitting our status as a New World City. We imagine a future in which a deep scar is healed in one of Brisbane’s most sacred and beloved natural environments while creating an iconic new place to visit that attracts people from all over the world, helping to make Brisbane a leading destination in the Asia Pacific Region for major events and global tourism.
This is a vision for Mt Coot-Tha that is open, green, accessible and both inspired by and deeply connected to its rich First Nations heritage while reflecting the contemporary and innovative spirit for which Brisbane and Australia are known around the world.

Better than a Zipline!
The existing Mt Cootha road won’t cope with the traffic when a concert is on at the new entertainment lawn.
Awesome project ,just include a world class wave pool and it will be a game changer .That is if the whingers dont put the kybosh on it
Looks really great. Hopefully it can be incorporated into the Olympic games for 2032. Dont forget to link it up with public transport otherwise the very narrow roads will become congested. Or it will be a white elephant if it’s not easily accessible to the public.
A great place to hold markets, outdoor cinema’s, outdoor opera, ballets, concerts etc
Perhaps even look at a beach similar to Southbank.
Perhaps we should be putting the Olympic Stadium out here too.
That looks fantastic , but the road would have to be improved
I hope it goes ahead great for Brisbane
I love this design. Brisbane deserves a beauty like this.
Hate it .
